NASCAR Community Grieves As Death Announcement Delays Race
Race nerves were subdued by an emotional announcement coming minutes before the green dropped. Coy Gibbs, Co-owner of Joe Gibbs Racing and father of yesterday's crowned Xfinity Champion Ty Gibbs had suddenly passed away in the early morning hours of the day. JGR scrambled to recover from the shocking loss as 23XI hunted down a replacement for Ty who was slated to pilot the number 23 car. Emotions were already running high for Kyle Busch as it marked his final race in an M&M paint scheme, final race for JGR and final full-time cup season with brother Kurt.
Logano Takes Title No. Two
A Dominating Day for Penske, Joey Logano pulling off an overwhelming victory had reason to smile as he fulfilled his promise to 4-year old son Hudson of winning the race. Teammate Ryan Blaney followed Logano with a similarly near flawless performance. The two Penske Ford drivers were class of the field and unchallenged after Elliott's seeming run to overtake on lap 200 ended in the wall.
A Disappointing day for Hendrick MS
Larson struggled. Elliott made progress in finding balance, a risky pit strategy call that worked in his favor before getting spun out off the nose of Chastain on a restart of a restart and no, that isn't a typo. Elliott's traditional quip "Why am I not surprised?" pretty much sums up this disappointing development that ended his day, though incredible recovery efforts by his pit crew on the busted toe link allowed him to complete the remaining 200 laps
Alex Bowman took another impact into the wall which wrapped up his competition debut after returning from concussion clearance to complete a final race with crew chief Greg Ives.
William Byron had a rough day as well, running midfield all day.
Devastating day for JGR
The announcement of Coy Gibb's passing undoubtedly affected the mental focus of the entire organization. The number 20's pit crew bobbled Bell's remaining chances for a title on the final stop. After making back critical track position, a crew member's finger got jammed in the lug nut well and in a post-race interview, Adam Stevens reported the injury was a likely fracture.
Trackhouse was Tracking
Chastain brought his best had a strong day coming back into contention from 25th position. On a track that is notably difficult to pass this spoke volumes about what Chastain was able to find in his car.
Troubled Tap Out for RCR
Tyler Reddick had the worse possible outcome today - another spin into the wall after coming into this race after last weeks exit over concussion-like symptoms sustained at Homestead. It was Reddick's last race with Richard Childress as he moves to the 23XI organization.
